However, unlike literally everything else he has ever written, the execution here is lacklustre. There are points of brilliance, sections of fast-paced action or dramatic character development, but not enough to be relied upon. This is an awesome concept with awesome characters and that familiar Sanderson style of writing. I feel like with all this awesomeness around the place, the plot never gets a chance to shine through and become a meaningful aspect of the story see what I did there This would be perfect as an episodic TV Series, and Sanderson has confirmed that he has signed a deal to try and make this happen.
An excellent Saturday morning read. Leeds is a genius; his mind contains too much information. And to cope it has split his skills off into individual personalities. They crowd his head, and he lives with them in a vast, empty mansion. While he can call on any one of them to solve a problem, he also walks a line across an all-consuming madness. Maybe, in time, it will be expanded to full-length status though that would require a lull in the author's absurdly busy schedule of books to write , but in the meantime, I'm content to read these gems whenever they make an appearance.
Stephen Leeds, also known as 'Legion', has a unique mental condition. He can become an expert on any subject in hours It begins with two unrelated events: the disappearance of Armando, one of Stephen's many "aspects," and an unexpected cry for help from Sandra, the woman who, many years before, helped him learn to live with his condition. In his Mistborn series Brandon Sanderson has written one of the seminal fantasy stories of his generation. Compelling and flawlessly executed with exquisite skill, the enormous magnitude of the story being told showcases the breathtaking imagination at work here.
Themes like religion and death are dealt with, power and helplessness, corruption and goodness. Weaved together like a master basket maker, this story lets you grow attached too, love, and lose, characters that you never thought would be lost. The impossible has happened. The Lord Ruler is dead has been vanquished. But so too is Kelsier the man who masterminded the triumph.
The awesome task of rebuilding the world has been left to his protege Vin; a one-time street urchin, now the most powerful Mistborn in the land. Worryingly for her Vin has become the focus of a new religion, a development that leaves her intensely uneasy. More worryingly still the mists have become unpredictable since the Lord Ruler died and a strage vaprous entity is stalking Vin. As the siege of Luthadel intensifies the ancient legend of the Well of Ascension offers the only glimmer of hope.
But no-one knows where it is or what it can do Two out of three books are spectacular, mixing the metaphysical with political, gripping action with heart wrenching characters, brilliant storytelling with smooth prose.
Tricked into releasing the evil spirit Ruin while attempting to close the Well of Ascension, new emperor Elend Venture and his wife, the assassin Vin, are now hard-pressed to save the world. This adventure brings the Mistborn epic fantasy trilogy to a dramatic and surprising climax as Sanderson's saga offers complex characters and a compelling plot, asking hard questions about loyalty, faith and responsibility. This book stands on its own, and is a wonderful read that kept me reading well into the early hours of the morning.
Waxillium Ladrian has returned to the capital city of Elendel from the far flung roughs. Elendel is crisscrossed by canals and railways and towers reach for the sky but this is still a city of dangers and of magic; Allomancy and Feruchemy can still change the world. Wax faces many more adventures. You can smell the horse leather and the coal in the air and you just want more. The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metalminds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command.
Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands, as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate. Along the way he discovers hints that point to the true goals of his uncle Edwarn and the shadowy organization known as The Set.
Elantris was built on magic and it thrived. But then the magic began to fade and Elantris began to rot. And now its shattered citizens face domination by a powerful Imperium motivated by dogged religious views.
Can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris, rediscover the lost magic and lead a rebellion against the imperial zealots? Brandon Sanderson's debut fantasy showed his skill as a storyteller and an imaginer of baroque magical systems to be fully developed from the start. Having discovered that there was a whole entire world of great fiction outside of fantasy I rarely ventured further than the Crime and Thriller aisle probably because it was closer to the front door , and so it wasn't until about 18 months ago when I started getting back into fantasy that I saw a copy of The Gathering Storm in the book store penned by some guy named Brandon Sanderson.
It was six months ago when I saw Josh's review of The Final Empire that I actually bought my first Brandon Sanderson book, and it was five days later, having just read the last pages of The Final Empire in one sitting, that I found my faith in the future of fantasy writing had been restored and that I must read everything written by this guy named Brandon Sanderson.
Warbreaker is the story of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, the God King one of them has to marry, a lesser god, and an immortal trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago.
Theirs is a world in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren's capital city. A world transformed by BioChromatic magic, a power based on an essence known as breath. Using magic is arduous: breath can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people. But the rewards are great: by using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be performed. Brandon Sanderson proves again that he is a master of what Tolkien called 'secondary creation,' the invention of whole worlds, complete with magics and myths all their own.
The colourful world full of intrigue and mystery made a big impression, as did the shocking plot twists. I dare not spoil the delights that are awaiting any who have yet to pick up this masterwork. On a side-note, the ending of this story is closed but in the epilogue he clearly implies that he could return to this world at a later point, for which I am very, very glad.
Adaptations of popular video games do not normally translate very well into any medium, they are often awkward and clunky, restricted by the mechanics of the game, and devoid of whatever it was in the video game that appealed to you so much. There are so few decent attempts at movies or books based on video games because video games are a completely different medium, they rely on player interaction and gaming mechanics to tell you the story over the course of around 12 - 15 hours.
This is a great choice for fans of Robert Jordan and Terry Brooks. Sanderson has built a world that leaps to life, a cast of varied characters, and a vast history […] while Sanderson cuts from the familiar cloth of fantasy, his narrative impetus and meticulous world-building bode well for future volumes.
The pace is breathless and although the book is long, everything has relevance. As the winner of the Gemmell Award for best fantasy novel, it well deserves the accolade. Culturally diverse and structurally sound, from the radiance of the City of Bells with its skyeels and songlings to the weather-cracked barrens of the Shattered Plains, the roots of this terrific world are dug deep, and as Sanderson goes about systematically exposing them, so too does he shed light on the complex systems underpinning the magic one imagines Roshar would not turn without.
The world is wonderfully creative with a deep history and uncertain future, the characters draw you in and make you care, and it all combines into something very special. Highly recommended […] Readers will be thrilled with this first book and anxiously await the next.
The sheer scope of the tale, the completeness of your vision of Roshar, is a wonder. A very impressive continuation. His eagerly awaited sequel to The Way of Kings exceeds expectations.
This developing epic series is a must-read for all fantasy fans. The journey will be worth it. Yes, you should buy this book. Yes, this is a series worth following to the end. Sanderson has truly brought back the epic fantasy […] The book has a quick and enjoyable flow while moving forward to a satisfying climax that sets up the series as the books move forward […] WORDS OF RADIANCE is an extremely satisfying read that shows what the beginning of an epic fantasy series should look like.
Award winners are always worth looking at. This one was an exceptional and worthy winner. Get in on the second floor before everyone else does. It is a love letter to its genre and an improvement upon anything the genre has ever churned out before. The magic system is incredibly unique […] Sanderson is taking me on a mind-blowing journey, which, so far, has been just as impressive as any conclusion or answers I could find. This novel was hands-down my favourite novel on the year.
Those large themes are writ over the characters and the balance of intimate and epic was quite satisfying […] I suspect novels in The Stormlight Archive will be the highlight Epic Fantasy novels of the year for quite a while to come. I look for a deeper level of world-building, and I hope for some answers to questions raised in the first book. Not only does it make good on the promises of the first two volumes, it elevates the Stormlight Archive to new heights of epic magic, exceptional worldbuilding, and satisfying action.
It is a wonderful, well-paced, emotional read with a poignant focus on the brokenness of people and how to overcome your own limits. It will be interesting to see how each character learns to rebalance their beliefs and actions.
Additionally, there is a whole new history which can be explored. I definitely did not expect the revelation, but it will make the future action more interesting. Once more Sanderson also delivers a high-octane ending, one which is full of action and suspense. He leaves his readers with tantalising revelations and copious amounts of questions. This is certainly another crucial book for all Cosmere fans to dive into. Relatable characters, an intricately built world, and a complex magic system Highs and lows, laughter and tears, joy and grief—it was all there.
Vin is an eminently sympathetic protagonist whose development over the course of the book is beautifully and realistically delineated. Strongly recommended. A good balance of good, evil, action, drama, politics, scheming, backstabbing, mystery—you name it, Mistborn has it all!
Staunch fans of Elantris no longer have to defend their new favorite fantasy author; with a riveting opener to an intriguing new series Sanderson is here to stay. Be sure to check this book out. Definitely worth a read. I liked the novel a great deal, and my enjoyment truly progressed with each page. I felt very much in tune with the characters and am glad I have the second book by my side to start reading. If you want to read one of the best fantasy books published in the last decade, then this definitely has to go at the top of your list.
A must have for any reader of good fantasy. It boasts all of the best fantasy elements: a unique magic system, a ragtag group of rebels led by a charismatic rogue, an orphan with mysterious powers. But Sanderson weaves those predictable elements into a breathtaking saga that promises twists every step of the way.
And then added seasonings. Highly recommended to anyone hungry for a good read. It both subverts an embraces the typical epic fantasy genre and it does both well.
The magic system is perfectly detailed, the world, though not completely revealed, has a great sense of natural logic to it, and the characters are a reflection of both.
Reading both books so far has helped to remind me why I enjoy Fantasy, especially those stories told in a secondary world, so much.
What I like about Sanderson is that he can write novels where the plot just hums along, and still have some profound character development going on at the same time. I loved this powerful conclusion, and I absolutely cannot wait to read more from Brandon Sanderson […] [it is] a great, final book in an extremely well-plotted and very VERY original Fantasy series which I highly recommend.
I would highly recommend this volume and the whole series without hesitation. I have no problem recommending this one. Sanderson continues to show that he is one of the best authors in the genre. Think fun. The characters really shine in this book. This book stands on its own and is a wonderful read that kept me reading well into the night.
I liked Alloy of Law a great deal, and will be eagerly waiting to see where he enxt takes the Mistborn saga. Filled with amusing Rough frontier banter in a realm in which early twentieth century technology and science competes with magic, fans will enjoy this action adventure caper.
Brandon Sanderson brilliantly provides a refreshing guns and sorcery thriller. Delightful characters. Fantasy fans will savor this exciting escapade. Picking out a favorite character might be hard—honorable but haunted Wax has merits, as does the lovely Marasi, struggling to succeed in the Elendel Constabulary—but Wayne remains one of the most charmingly irrepressible thieves in fantasy.
Sanderson does an incredible job of worldbuilding, and his novels never fail to impress. This latest Mistborn novel is full of suspense, mystery, magic, and mysticism. The story is riveting and the characters are vivid and engaging [ All the familiar elements from the earlier Mistborn novels are here, including the metal-based magics of allomancy, feruchemy, and the forbidden art of hemalurgy about which more is revealed over the course of this story.
This is a very satisfying conclusion, but one that also definitely sets up further stories in this universe. The warmth between the main characters is genuine and heartfelt. This is a fabulous novel with great action and pacing, politics, a quest, a very well developed mythology, and thoroughly memorable characters. Highly Recommended! Along the way there will be love, laughs and great secrets revealed, which will change the face of the world forever. As the pulse-pounding story intensifies and reveals its secrets, a cliffhanger ending sets things up for the next installment.
Even hardcore Cosmere fans will enjoy the special mix of fantasy and sci-fi that unfolds as you watch Spensa learn what it means to be truly brave. STARSIGHT took a sharp turn in a new direction early on, and Sanderson throws in several game-changer developments throughout the novel, keeping both Spensa and the reader on their toes [ It is a story of fear, of facing that fear and growing stronger for the staring down of it.
It is a tale of friendship, loyalty and sacrifice. And it is beautiful. And there were several surprising twists along the way. I really enjoyed the new, diverse characters. In fact, I enjoyed this sequel even more than the previous novel. With plenty of danger, suspense, intrigue, and drama — this well-paced story left me excited for the next installment.
Hopefully, this will lead to a whole series of Legion stories as there is so much to be mined about this character or is it characters? This concept and plot is worthy of many more pages, though, so I sincerely hope that Brandon Sanderson will be writing more stories about Stephen Leeds and his legion.
I read it in a couple of hours and enjoyed it a great deal. We might even have some revelations about the human psyche in the process. It reads like a ready-made tale for a TV show, and, indeed, one is in the works. It delivered very different and unique voices for all of the characters and hallucinatory characters that Leeds has. The dialogue between himself and his hallucinations is so much fun to listen to at times that I even went back and wrote some of them down for favorite quotes.
Also, how freaking impressive is it that this is his side project? Sanderson packs a full plot into this novella along with some pretty awesome anticipation for where the series is going to go. I loved getting to know him better and be along for the ride while he solved yet another mystery. Each is a captivating story with humor, suspense, and drama.
Sanderson handles it all with a deft, humorous hand. Stories that are so much fun, you almost need your own bunch of alternate personalities to appreciate them. I flew through this and loved every single word. This book right here is why I love reading, it grabs you and takes you on a journey. Brandon Sanderson is a master story teller and I highly highly recommend this book! But it is! It so is. Fantastical, wonderful, all the good words. With cliffhangers at the end of every chapter, it will be hard to put this book down long enough to eat and sleep, never mind doing responsible things like going to work or school.
Sanderson has an unparalleled gift for fantastic world-building and the creation of complex, believable characters. It breaks new ground in superpower fiction […] should take its place among the new classics. However, its most striking characteristic may be the writing itself. Like his other work, the pacing is quick, the plot is layered and the action jumps off the pages. The writing was fast paced with lots of action and awesome fighting. Again […] Sanderson is also stellar at writing action sequences.
Pretty spectacular. The book is full of action and plot twists, as well as the types of creative inventions that Sanderson is known for. The only word that comes to mind is epic. It also contains some very enjoyable twists. Simply said. Great book.
