The methodology of the observational study is flawed in a few ways. For one, I don't think you are considering any confounding variables such as how the ranking system comes into effect. If one race is overpowered then it's simple to assume that it will be overrepresented in relation to its total population within the top of diamond rank only.

But this could also be confounded by how people think Terran is the strongest race, so the more serious players switch over to that race thinking this is true. In addition, the sample sizes here are very small. I would like to hear what a statistician, or Blizzard statistician has to say about the data.

I'm sorry if I sounded harsh. Great effort put into this. This is the first of many untested assumptions. Resources Buildings Units Upgrades Attributes. Categories : Wordbook Definitions. I really liked what heroes did to Warcraft 3 so I hope that Jimmy, Duran etc aren't just beefed up versions of normal units but have special abilities etc.

Well, Battle. For example, piracy is actually HUGE, and you can't play battle. I think it's something everyone has tried, but there aren't very many people wearing headsets and joining clans, meeting online once a week. It's not a huge selling point. It's more like a non-invasive anti-piracy measure. It's like a bizarro universe version of myself. Anyone else combed the new gameplay trailer for easter eggs yet? I watched it once for the content and I've gone through part of it again looking for the hidden stuffs.

So far all I have found is a hologram chick at and on during the demo of the Immortals doing the Night Elf female dance. I think you're wrong and the number of people still playing on battle.

Any game with three races or more. I never found SC all that balanced. Of course, my opinion differs alot from most, but I think people view Starcraft with rose-tinted glasses. The Dawn of War engine is now 3 years old, so it's not like Relic haven't had plenty of time to get their heads around balance. Let's look at the 7 races: Necron - Agreed to be a broken as in imba race by the vast majority of the community. One turret makes your early economy untouchable.

Not true. Having played Necron a lot, you can easily get your early economy hit with a single turret up; in fact I rarely built them. The 'imba' unit was Flayers, to my knowledge. If you say so. I don't agree. They used to be massively OP with Krootox but I think those got fixed. Impossible to stop for all practical purposes. Their only hope against Eldar is turret rushing. I agree they were harder to play, but not completely useless.

I do think they were a bit underpowered, though, especially because their heavy weapons teams couldn't be targetted manually. A race that could beat Necron every time without much effort, but Necron were the OP race?

Yes, I'm calling your judgement into question. Probably as close to a balanced and well designed race as you can get now. Orks were weak because most of their units had light armor so any opposing team automatically knew what to build to counter them.

That's not true anymore and now they're not weak. They do have some weaknesses though, so some races have it easy against them. I don't think they have any weaknesses a good Eldar player can't make up for. Of all of the races, I'd say they've consistently been the most powerful. They're not the easiest to play, as you say, because they require more micro. I don't think you proved your point.

I haven't played DoW in say, half a year or so, but it wasn't so massively out of balance at the time. As for StarCraft, I distinctly remember it having huge issues with balance well after release. When you've had 10 years to balance a game, yes it will get better over time. But for me? Starcraft's 'playable' time was about a year after it's release, and it was NOT balanced at that time. The thing that keeps Starcaft going isn't it's balance, it's that you can play it on any piece of shit and people still play it.

It could have big imbalances and people would still play it. I haven't played it in 5 or more years, so I couldn't tell you if it did have imbalances, but I'd be suprised to find it didn't. I can't tell what you're talking about to be certain, but surely you don't think the Eldar's eldrich storm is imbalanced and the Protoss' micro-requiring psychic storm is not. Starcraft was WC2 in space.

Their graphics engine was so out of date that when they went to E3 with it and people laughed, they had to take a massive amount of time to re-vamp it.

They had a massive beta to work on their balance, and at release the game was NOT considered balanced, and each patch quickly involved everyone trying to figure out which race was best, then practicing their new best build order and rush.

I will give it to Blizzard, they stuck by their game and patched it and patched it, but that's in comparison to WarCraft 2, where the Ork side was so overly powerful and never balanced Ogre Bloodlust. Was Warcraft 3 balanced at release? Is it balanced now? You're viewing things with rose tinted goggles.

If you liked Starcraft, that's your business. But it was not the best RTS of all time by any means, it didn't do anything to push the RTS genre forward except perhaps the three races thing, which I don't really think was pushing it forward much.

It had a good story, and could play on crap. That's it. Had it been released a year or two earlier, it would have been GREAT, but by the time it was released competitors had already done better. You're forgetting Diablo. Then Warcraft 2: Battle. Net Edition came out, and War2 got popular again.

Because Battle. Net made the game accessible again. What made the multiplayer popular in Starcraft was the ability to play with strangers. Net let you play with the hordes online. It means unbalanced , and it comes from imbalance. I have no idea why it became imba rather than unba , which would have been more logical; but this is how I have seen it used with regard to games.

I don't think I have ever seen it used elsewhere. It is used to indicate that a certain move, feature, or property renders one choice far superior or inferior to another, in such a way as to force a player into the superior choice or out of the inferior choice, whereas normally a good game would give a player several equally valid paths to victory.
